As part of our ongoing effort to operate a more sustainable business LifeSource Natural Foods has owned and operated a 1997 Chevrolet EV-1 pickup for the last several years. Our pickup was fitted with batteries and a high powered electric motor in the late ’90s.
At one time California had laws requiring automobile manufacturers begin to produce electric vehicles. In addition to the EV-1 there were several other vehicles developed:
Toyota developed the Rav4EV
Ford produced the Ford Ranger EV
Honda made the EV Plus
Chrysler the EPIC minivan
and Nissan the Altra EV station wagon
The law was significantly modified shortly thereafter and the production of these vehicles was shut down by the manufacturers. Many of the electric vehicles had been leased and when those leases ended the cars were recalled and crushed. A few fell into private hands including the one that LifeSource now owns.
