You may know about Life Source’s large selection of Fair Trade coffees and chocolates, but did you know that we also carry a wide variety of accessories and household goods that are also fairly traded?
So what is Fair Trade? Fair trade is a market-based approach to alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability. It aims to educate and empower disadvantaged producers and connect them to a market, so they too can participate in global trade. It encompasses principles such as:
- Anti-slave, anti-child labor
- Environmental sustainability
- A respectful relationship between producers and buyers
- A fair wage for the producers
- A healthy working environment for producers
- Gender equality with respect to wages and working conditions
- The development of communities for self-sustainability
When you purchase fairly traded items you are not only getting a unique, high quality item, you are also helping to support these causes.
Of the fair trade items we carry at LifeSource, the Batik fabric napkins from Hand Made Expressions are among my favorites. The napkins are in rich colors and can handle years worth of use. I know, I have had a set for 6 years and with each washing the napkins not only hold their color they get softer. Hand Made Expressions also has a wide range of jewelry, shopping bags, wallets and purses, cute ornaments, and wall hangings. Each and every one is well made.
We also carry a varying selection of rayon, cotton and satin scarves from all over the world, in a rainbow of colors and styles. The selection is always changing with the seasons so keep an eye out—they sell quickly!
During the fall and winter months Life Source carries a line from Andes Gifts, featuring hats, scarves, gloves, arm warmers and more. Each item is made from Alpaca wool, soft and luxurious to touch, and a beautiful way to stay warm.
These are only a sampling of the Fair Trade products we carry in our mercantile department and the selection changes month to month for a fun shopping experience. Come and explore!
